Dr. Ruba Rizik's Journey underscores the Vital Role of Strengthening Pediatric Care

My name is Dr. Ruba Rizik. I am from Hizme, Palestine. I completed my medical studies at Al Quds University in Abu Dis, and my pediatric residency at Al-Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem. In January, I began my fellowship in pediatric intensive care at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan. It has always been my aspiration to work in the critical care unit of pediatrics, where I can make a real impact on the lives of children and their families through excellent care and decision-making.

Getting accepted into the best facility in the region, Sheba Medical Center, has been a long journey for me. Rozana supported me every step of the way until we finally succeeded in starting the fellowship in January 2024. Beginning the fellowship was incredibly exciting as it fulfilled a long-held dream of mine.

My aspiration to make a tangible impact on children's lives in Palestine aligns with the urgent need for enhanced pediatric care in local institutions. Rather than pediatric patients enduring arduous permit processes and checkpoints, I will offer the necessary expertise locally.

Integrating with the team and overcoming language barriers has been a significant obstacle. Recognizing the importance of communication, especially with patients and their families, I embarked on a Hebrew course facilitated by Rozana.

While English is widely spoken, learning Hebrew has enhanced my ability to connect with children and gain their trust, as well as that of their families. I have also been able to get to know my colleagues better. The team here is nice and is helping me merge withing the system. The attending physicians are sharing their experience and knowledge so that I can learn as much as I can.

Though the path ahead may be challenging, I am confident that the brighter future and improved care I bring back to our children will make it all worthwhile.
